About Eleanor Ruckman

Eleanor Ruckman hand blessingI am an art therapist and licensed marriage and family therapist (license #40803), who has used the creative process for over twelve years to help people to experience wholeness and wellness. I love what I do! Clients have appreciated my direct but gentle style; my laughter and sense of humor; and how deeply I care about their lives and their healing.

I blend visual art, body awareness, and relaxation exercises with thoughtful questions and careful listening. My approach is compassionate and practical, focused on identifying and building strengths to reduce symptoms and find relief. I emphasize cultural competency, and have worked with people of many different ages, backgrounds and issues, including relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, grief, illness, and trauma. Together we use art to find creative solutions to stuck situations, reduce conflicts, and develop more adaptive communication and thought patterns.

I received my BA in fine art from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and my MA in counseling and art therapy from the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, California. I currently serve as chair of the diversity committee for the board of the East Bay Chapter of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.

I provide workshops, trainings, and consultation on art therapy throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

Professional affiliations include work for adolescent day treatment and mental-health enriched classrooms at Stars Community Services in San Leandro and Families First in Concord and Clayton; community-based therapy for Family Paths/Parental Stress Service in Oakland and San Mateo’s FUTURES project; and volunteering with Drawbridge to provide art groups for children in San Francisco homeless shelters.
